Abstract

This paper describes a method of predicting the transient response of a small salient pole alternator during a sudden three-phase shortcircuit using a time-stepping, two-dimensional, nonlinear finite element field model in conjunction with circuit equations. Alternator parameters are deduced from the predicted response and compared with practical measurements and data published by the alternator manufacturer. The method is also used to predictthe response following the sudden application of a resistive load.
