Abstract

The theoretical basis for application of finite element techniques to a general three-dimensional flow problem is presented. The finite element solution of Reynold's equation for incompressible and compressible fluids has been programmed and applied to the particular case of gas lubricated Rayleigh step journal bearing. The calculated pressure distribution and the load and attitude angle are given for different compressibility numbers and journal lengths. The results are compared with those obtained with simplifying assumptions.
