Abstract

Cracking at welded diaphragm-girder connections in interstate highway bridges is induced by live load secondary stresses transmitted from girder to girder through the diaphragms. A repair technique that is simple to implement and has a high potential for success is removal of the diaphragms. A three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) dynamic analysis is conducted to evaluate the effects of removing diaphragms from a simply supported straight I-beam composite bridge.
