Abstract
A formula is derived for predicting the time-dependent probability of fracture of brittle materials under multiaxial stress states. A finite-element analysis is performed to calculate its value for a ceramic beam (silicon nitride—Si 3N 4) subject to bending moment and also for the root of a ceramic gas turbine blade. It is found that the formula can be conveniently used in practical design of components made from brittle materials.
