Abstract

For the 33 JPC, we presented the preliminary results of using VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector) to test the inner ferrules of SMDC (Shielded Mild Detonating Cord) Assemblies in AIAA 97-2964. For this paper, the testing using the VISAR will be completed and we will present all of the data received. We will compare the results to the previously used SMDC test methods such as dent block and Booster Tip Fragment Velocity (BTFV). Our initial results showed that the particle velocity as measured by the VISAR in the Mild Detonating Cord away from the inner ferrule was greater than the particle velocity coming out near the inner ferrule. Since additional data will be obtained from continued testing, we will be able to better assess the previous results. This test program will be accomplished using lines that have been manufactured with three different inner ferrule configurations. Additionally, some assemblies will be tested using conventional test methods for comparison. In the paper we will discuss the conventional testing methods, the VISAR testing methods and provide the results of the testing on the inner ferrule area of the SMDC Assembly.
