Abstract

A new explanation for the image formation of DO 3 -ordered Fe 3 Al by field ion microscropy is presented. Based on systematic features of field ion micrographs, a comparison of the planar density among three possible imaging modes and a close examination of the (100) pole, it is deduced that Al is the imaged species owing to the selective ionization mechanism. The difference of the field evaporation end form between ordered alloys and pure metals is also discussed
