Abstract

Filmwise reflux condensation lengths and transition points from the filmwise reflux condensation to the complete reflux condensation mode have been investigated in a single verticle U-tube. A simple analytical expression for the filmwise reflux condensation length was derived based partly on the existing empirical correlation for the heat transfer in laminar film condensation on vertical tubes. Predictions of this model were compared with experimental data for different shell-side coolant temperatures. In addition, experimentally determined transition points from the filmwise reflux condensation to the complete reflux condensation were compared with predictions of an existing model. Agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data is fairly good and consistent for the ranges of test parameters examined in the present work.
