Film-Incorporated Curriculum: Adding Authenticity and Versatility to Foreign Language Classrooms

Abstract

ABSTRACT Film is an important resource that language teachers can use to present language learners with authentic use of the target language and cultural contexts. Many studies have discussed the utility and efficacy of film for intermediate and advanced language curricula, but there are few studies for elementary language classrooms. This forum introduces a curriculum that was used in an elementary Korean class and that helped students improve their language skills and understanding of the target culture. The curriculum used both an entire film and short clips from the film to exploit the benefits that both approaches have. In sharing the methodologies that the curriculum used, this forum proposes that film is effective for elementary language learners and presents film as a valuable resource that can bring authenticity, versatility, and fun to language classrooms.
