Abstract

File system sharing protocols typically operate at layer 6 and 7 of the OSI model. The presentation and management of file or data interchange is built on top of the physical, datalink, transport, network, and session services already established for a given set of servers. In this chapter, I’ll discuss two of the commonly found file sharing mechanisms, Network File System (NFS) and Server Message Block (SMB)/ Common Internet File System (CIFS), as well as the way in which the two of them leverage lower layers of the networking stack.
