Abstract

This chapter describes a field trial on prevention and vaccinotherapy of trachoma. Results of a preventive and therapeutic field trial of trachoma vaccination carried out on 3650 cases in Ethiopia have been reported. All vaccines were prepared using the strain Trachoma/Asmara/3/1960 isolated in 1960. This study used PGS 50% suspension of one or more heavily infected yolk sac membranes harvested from eggs still alive at the moment of collection, quickly frozen, and kept on hand in dry ice chamber or in a −70°C deep freezer. Eggs were collected from chicken properly fed and incubated at 39°C for 6 days. A mineral oil coadjuvant was used in most of the cases. Inactivated vaccines with differing types of suspending media as saline, aluminum hydroxide, and mineral oils, were used. Results were favorable and statistically significant. Good results were also recorded when vaccination was associated with a minimal chemiotherapic treatment.
