Abstract

Many metropolises in developing countries have the slums where water environment and sanitary condition is a severe problem because of untreated waste water. In this study, a field research on the water use and effluent was carried out in the slums of Bandon City in Indonesia as the first step for planning the rehabilitation of the water environment: The water use was surveyed by interviews at 62 residences, the amount and quality of domestic waste water was measured at two families, and the flow rate and water quality was measured in a effluent channel flowing through the slums. Integrating analysis lead to the following conclusions: The average water use is about 100 litters/person/day, in which the water use at toilet takes 40%. About 90% of PO4-P and 70% of COD are discharged from toilets.
