Abstract
The balanced mix design (BMD) approach was implemented by agencies to complement the volumetric mix design method. The BMD approach addresses typical pavement distresses using mechanical tests. This study aimed to validate the Hamburg Wheel Track (HWT) rut depth and Semi Circular Bend (SCB) critical strain-energy release rate (Jc) thresholds specified in the Louisiana BMD framework. Seven field projects, including 13 pavement sections with 8–18 service years, were evaluated. Field distress data showed that the maximum HWT rut depth and minimum SCB Jc thresholds are effective parameters for assessing rutting and cracking performance, respectively.
