Abstract

This paper proposes a novel Semi-active Smart Rock Technology (SSRT), which is a great improvement of the Passive Smart Rock Technology (PSRT). One semi-active smart rock is a cylindrical magnet core encased by a sphere concrete mantle. The cylindrical magnet is rotatable by its surrounding current switched with remote control. Also, the cylindrical magnet is designed as an Automatically Pointing South System (APSS), indicating the south pole of the cylindrical magnet is always pointing to the geographic south. First, a small-size semi-active smart rock is fabricated and verified by the field test. Then, a full-size semi-active smart rock is fabricated and used in the field test. The encased cylindrical magnet rotates periodically, resulting in a periodical variation of the magnetic field. This periodical variation is used to separate the Earth magnetic intensity and the magnetic intensity induced by the encased magnet, respectively. The position of the smart rock is measured twice before and after rotating the cylindrical magnet. This dual measurement results in a higher accuracy of the position of the smart rock, which is developed to calculate the scour depth of the bridge pier.
