Abstract
In realization of contact force between catheter tip and the tissue is very critical, there is a need to develop compact and sensitive force sensor. Hence, in this study, a novel miniature force sensor comprised of fiber optics and micro-capillaries, based on fiber optic lateral coupling had been designed, simulated, fabricated and evaluated. In this context, two types viz. micro-capillary fiber optic assembly (CAP) micro-cone – anti-cone assembly (CONE) were proposed. FDTD simulation studies were performed on CONE to estimate the spacing between two fiber optics. It was found that the coupling spacing below 1.5 μm is suitable to couple the light. The fabricated CAP was successfully evaluated up to the required applied force i.e. 32 gF for biomedical applications. The observed travel length of micro-capillary over the fiber core was observed to be 189.873μm for the applied force of 32 gF.
