Abstract

A nonlinear partial differential equation describing the fiber coarsening process by the radial diffusion of the supersaturated solute in the solid matrix to pre-existing fibers during eutectic solidification was solved through a finite difference method using a computer. The effects of the axial temperature gradient and the radial concentration gradient were coupled to predict the transient changes of the mass fraction of axially aligned eutectic fibers.
