Abstract

Many women, especially in countries with restrictive abortion laws, attempt to end an early pregnancy with misoprostol. However, due to the lack of standardized information and instructions, women use misoprostol in a variety of forms, with wide variability in the dose and stage of pregnancy. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin I 2 analog, used in obstetrics for cervical ripening, medical abortion, uterine evacuation in embryonic and fetal death, and labor induction.Multiple forms of teratogenicity due to the indiscriminate use of this drug have been described, such as Moebius syndrome, club foot, hydrocephalus and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. We report a case of fetopathy due to misoprostol with postmortem analysis. A review of the topic in the world literature is also provided.
