Abstract
Hybrids were produced from interspecific crosses between Heliothis virescens (F.) and H. subflexa (Guenée), and backcross progeny (BC) were obtained by crossing hybrid females with H. subflexa males. The reproductive capacity of BC1 and BC2 adults was determined by crossing both males and females with H. virescens and H. subflexa. The BC1 and BC2 females were partially to fully fertile; the BC1 males were mostly sterile. Females crossed with BC1 males seldom received eupyrene sperm in their spermathecae. Females mated with BC2 males received eupyrene sperm more frequently and the eggs they laid had a higher percentage hatchability than those laid by females crossed with BC1 males. This recovery of fertility in BC2 males was not dependent upon type of interspecific cross or upon species of female.
