Abstract

Abstract Recent investigations of free-standing films with high spontaneous polarization have shown anomalies in phase diagrams, collective dynamics and phase structures which occur by decreasing the films thickness. Such behaviour can be explained by dimensional crossover effects with taking into account surface ordering phenomena. Experimental and theoretical results on ferroelectricity of free-standing films are reviewed.
