Abstract
For many decades, switching of ferroelectric polarization has been considered as a process of nucleation and growth of domains. Due to this mechanism, the switching time is limited from below to nanoseconds. Problems with interfaces and electric circuits even increase this time. In this article, we give brief review of new approach that can breakthrough decrease switching times by using freely propagating electromagnetic pulses. As examples, we show our recent results on ultrafast dynamic polarization switching. At the end, we discuss the reasons why it has not yet been possible to achieve a permanent polarization reversal.
