Abstract

ABSTRACTIt has been found that structural phase transition in KIn(WO4)2 occurs at the temperature 499 K that is much higher than reported in literature. Temperature observations of the crystal in a polarised light reveal the ferroelastic domain structure consistent with the monoclinic symmetry. An orientation of optical indicatrix axes corresponding to refractive indices ng and nm has been found and optical birefringence has been measured in (0001) plane. Based on electron paramagnetic resonance studies of Gd3+ ions and the disposition of optical indicatrix axes the monoclinic symmetry C2/c has been suggested for the ferroelastic phase of KIn(WO4)2.
