Abstract

Our article focuses on the analysis of coded messages and correspondence that started to appear during the Renaissance, a time when keeping political secrets had become a necessity. Our aim is to draw the background of a subsequent research in the field of coded correspondence, putting into perspective the difficulties of the identification of coded letters, due to a deficient organisation of most archives, especially when it comes to female coded correspondence.
