Abstract
Over the past decade there has been a growing interest in female entrepreneurs due to the tremendous growth in women-owned businesses. Currently women own 25 per cent of all small businesses in the United States and by the year 2000 are expected to control 50 per cent of the small businesses. This paper reports on a study of ninety-one female entrepreneurs in the apparel retail trade. The purpose of the study was to identify common personal and professional characteristics among female entrepreneurs. Specific areas of investigation included educational/experiential preparedness, motivations for business owner- ship, the impact of a significant other and a current business profile. A like-sized sample of male entrepreneurs in apparel retail businesses was also included in the study to compare similarities/differences between the genders.
