Abstract

In this study, two spherical (P1: hard, P2: soft) tantalum powders as well as their binary mixtures (P1 + 20 wt.% P2) were deposited using high pressure cold spray to investigate the powder characteristics effect. The coating microstructure and cold sprayability metrics (porosity, deposition efficiency (DE), cohesion strength) were evaluated. Results show that i) soft tantalum powder (P2) exhibits slightly higher deposition efficiency (DE) and much higher cohesion strength than the hard tantalum powder (P1); ii) mixing tantalum powders with different hardnesses (P1 + P2) can lead to improved DE and strength compared with single component P1 and P2 powders.
