Abstract

A study has been made of the densitization of radiation degradation of PMMA exposed to irradiation on Aerosil. The resulting degree of sensitization was found to be considerable on Aerosil compared with the degree observed for the bulk polymer. This was attributed to effective transfer of energy, absorbed by the volume of Aerosil particles, to their surface. The yield of PMMA main chain breakages has been investigated in relation to conditions of PMMA synthesis and to PMMA concentrations on the surface. A significant degree of inhibition of gelation was observed in the case of irradiation of polymethyl acrylate on Aerosil compared with irradiation of the bulk polymer.
