Abstract

The aim of the research was to study anxiety of highly qualified athletes. Methods. 41 athletes with high sports qualifications participated in the study. The athletes were representatives of more than 20 sports, which were considered cyclic and acyclic, individual and team. In the course of the study, the following methods were used: "Assessment of situational and personal anxiety" (C.D. Spielberger – Y.L. Khanin), "Self-assessment of mental states" (G. Aizenk). The studies have found that highly qualified female athletes have higher rates of general anxiety, frustration and rigidity (p = 0.01). Personal anxiety is higher in cyclical sports athletes (p ≤ 0.01). It is at odds with other studies, but proves the role of a personal factor in influencing anxiety, and not only the kind of sport. The frustration of athletes is significantly higher in team sports compared to individual sports (p ≤ 0.05), due to the higher uncertainty of achievement of results. The limitations of the study included an insufficient sample of athletes. Further research may be aimed at identifying the personal predicates of anxiety in highly qualified athletes.
