Abstract

The paper provides a systematic methodology for Geometric Benchmark Test Artifact (GBTA) design for evaluating the geometric behavior of Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. The methodology is based on feature technology, a classification system based on geometric reasoning, and assembly considerations for part design. It includes dividing the complex geometries into generic implicit features (cubes, cylinders, prisms) with known geometric characteristics to facilitate feature selection depending on required output Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), fit for assembly evaluation and other geometric properties. Finally, a case study is presented to demonstrate the methodology for designing a GBTA specifically for an application product.
