Abstract

AbstractWith a growing emphasis on environmentally friendly manufacturing, the evaluation of the environmental performance of additive manufacturing (AM) processes has gained attention. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an important tool to compute the environmental impacts of AM processes. LCA studies of AM processes require life cycle inventory (LCI) data in the form of natural resources, energy consumed, and wastes and emissions associated with these processes. This chapter collects and summarizes the LCI data for different AM processes from the existing literature. It is observed that AM processes in general have higher energy demand than the conventional manufacturing processes. However, the better material utilization of the AM processes, particularly in manufacturing complex shapes, can make them more sustainable in comparison with the conventional manufacturing (CM) processes. The LCI data presented in this chapter can be useful to the manufacturers, researchers, and LCA practitioners in performing LCAs of AM processes and choosing the most sustainable process.KeywordsLife cycle inventoryAdditive manufacturingLife cycle assessment
