Abstract

The growing trend of energy demand has imposed a significant strain on the environment. Since sustainable development is a dominating agenda or top goal for virtually every country, there is an urgent need to discover clean and sustainable alternatives to existing non-renewable resources (e.g., fossil fuels). As a clean, safe, and efficient energy source, hydrogen offers a wide range of uses to fulfill energy demands while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen-related technologies, particularly hydrogen energy storage technology, have advanced rapidly in recent decades. As a result, this study will investigate several hydrogen generations and storage technologies. In addition, based on qualitative and quantitative investigations, this paper examines and compares various hydrogen storage technologies in order to establish a viable methodology that may be employed in large-scale enterprises. Moreover, the further outlook for renewable energy storage development has also been discussed in this study. These results shed light on the development maturity of energy storage, specifically for hydrogen storage.
