Abstract

INTRODUCTION Dr. Allen Fox addressed a significant motivational challenge for many athletes and coaches – fear of failure. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to comment on this thought-provoking article by such an accomplished coach. My aims here will be to connect the very practical perspective in the target article with the broader scientific literature, to highlight consistencies and discrepancies between these perspectives, and to identify what I believe to be some of the most critical scientific and practical issues related to fear of failure in competitive sport. Given the constraints of this forum, my treatment will be necessarily incomplete and I will focus my comments around two major themes – how fear of failure is conceptualized and the strategies available for coaches working with athletes who fear failing.
