Abstract

1. 1. The principal lipid classes of Physalia physalis were separated and quantitated with polar lipids accounting for the largest fraction. 2. 2. Fatty acids were principally unsaturated. Arachidonic acid (20:4ω6) accounted for an unusually high fraction of the fatty acids for a marine invertebrate. 3. 3. The unusual fatty acids, trans-6-hexadecenoic acid ( t16: 1ω10) and 7-methyl-7-hexadecenoic acid, were conspicuously present in the lipids of Physalia. Small amounts of t18:1ω10 and t24:1ω10 were also identified. 4. 4. Cholesterol esters contained the greatest percentage of t16:1ω10 and the polar lipids contained the greatest abundance of 7-methyl-7-hexadecenoic acid.
