Abstract

1. 1. In homogenates of rat liver and in the sub-cellular fractions isolated from these homogenates the fatty acid-synthesizing systems of the mitochondria, the microsomes and the non-particulate fraction can be measured independently. The relative contributions of these systems have been determined. 2. 2. Satisfactory recoveries of the activities of the microsomal and non-particulate fatty acid-synthesizing systems can be obtained by reversal of the usual fractionation procedure, so that these two fractions are first isolated. 3. 3. Mitochondrial fatty acid elongation with acetyl-CoA is unaffected by starvation while the microsomal elongation with malonyl-CoA is depressed to one-sixth of the values for the livers of fed rats.
