Abstract

Rats fed a high-sugar diet deficient in essential fatty acids (EFAs) had a high incidence of molar caries. Rats fed an EFA supplemented diet had no caries. The fatty acid composition of tissue from carious teeth is different from that found in non-carious teeth in the same animals; this is considered to result from the action of cariogenic bacteria.
