Abstract

In this study, AA5052 aluminum alloy was welded to high strength low alloy steel HC420LA by magnetic pulse welding. The joint showed higher strength than the base metal and the shear strength exceeded 100 MPa. The weld area increase 36% when the discharge energy rose from 25 kJ to 40 kJ. The weld usually showed better fatigue resistance than the base metal under low stress amplitude (Sa ≤ 20 MPa), while interfacial failure would occur under high stress amplitude (Sa ≥ 26.7 MPa). Meanwhile, brittle fracture and ductile fracture were coexisted in the interfacial fracture surface.
