Abstract

Near-threshold fatigue crack growth was examined for a x7090-T6 Powder Metallurgy (P/M) alloy at two different load ratios, R = 0.05 and R = 0.5. Attention was focussed on the crack closure characteristics in the near-threshold region. It was found that crack closure in the near threshold region is higher at R = 0.05 than at R = 0.5, in fact at R = 0.5 the closure effect exists only for ΔK values very near to the threshold. The results of threshold tests are discussed in terms of the crack closure effect associated with a combined Mode II and Mode I crack process.
