Abstract
A three-dimensional concept of flexible pavement and asphalt paving mixture designs is presented: stability, durability, and flexural fatigue resistance. Four major factors influencing the flexural fatigue characteristics of flexible pavement and asphalt paving mixtures are analyzed with respect to the major controlling variables. These four major factors are: properties of wearing surface, properties of base course and subgrade, characteristics of loading, and effects of environment. Theories, hypotheses, and criteria for flexural fatigue failure and fracture mechanics are developed in terms of levels of strain, stress, and deflection. Possible approaches for precluding fatigue failure in flexible pavement are presented.
