Abstract
The liver plays a central role in clearing bacteria from the bloodstream. Two articles in this issue of Cell Host&Microbe (Broadley etal., 2016; Zeng etal., 2016) identify new mechanisms by which resident liver macrophages (Kupffer cells) rapidly capture bacteria from the blood and eliminate them, while still allowing for the induction of adaptive immunity.
