Abstract

A visit to the Cray 1 computer currently installed at the Rutherford Laboratory for the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMRWF), prior to the permanent installation of a Cray at Shinfield when the ECMRWF moves there later this year, was included in a recent meeting of the Computational Physics Group of The Institute of Physics. The five ton Cray computer, which is typically 4-20 times faster than the IBM 360/195 on programs suitable for parallel processing, is less than 3 m in diameter and 2 m high; this enables internal wire lengths to be kept down to a maximum of about 1 m and contributes significantly to its speed.
