Abstract

The hospital is an integral part of the health system with the function of distributing to society a complete and systematic health care in the curative or preventive area, with preventive and curative actions. Within the hospital environment, the clinical unit responsible for technical, administrative and accounting assistance is called a hospital pharmacy and is administered by a pharmacist. Its purpose within the unit is to serve the entire hospital community with respect to pharmaceutical inputs and their relationship to hospital activities. It is an assistance, technical-scientific and administrative body responsible for all stages of the pharmaceutical cycle within the hospital. The present study aimed to describe the importance of the pharmacist in the development of hospital pharmacy activities. A qualitative approach was carried out through the reading of articles produced in the electronic databases Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PUBMED), US National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE) between 2012 and 2016. The results indicate that the activities of the hospital pharmacy have a significant impact on the actions performed within the hospital and in the hospital pharmaceutical care. It is also concluded that when carried out appropriately, these actions contribute to the achievement of the institution's objectives, helping in the rational use of the drug and improving the patient's quality of life.
