We investigate fanfiction (i.e., original fiction adopting elements of pre-existing media), as a copyright-violating phenomenon and show it can benefit brands. Our work first identifies two benefits of fanfiction: 1) reading fanfiction increases purchase intent for brand content, 2) and fanfiction production rates can be used to generate more accurate estimates of next-week TV viewership. Next, we identify that brands can grow their fanfiction communities by waiving copyright protection, thus removing a barrier to publication faced by many fanfiction authors. We demonstrate these results using two real-world datasets representing billions of words of fanfiction content, and one lab study (N=600).

  • Jutatip Kastner-Jamsawang + 1 more

Shelf perception is vital for both manufacturers and retailers, as they attempt to satisfy consumer needs and to optimize their profits. On the other hand, consumers have to deal with a vast number of products offered in a modern supermarket and might be confronted with difficulties accomplishing their choice of products. This paper focuses on customer perspective and aims to gain further insights and a profound understanding of on-shelf merchandising, espe-cially visual attention, visual perceptions, and purchase intention of products positioned on the supermarket shelves. After providing an overview of the extant literature, this article reports on four empirical studies: a lab study using a stationary eye tracker, a lab study and field studies in supermarkets of two different retail chains, all using a mobile eye tracker. The research agenda deals with perceptions of horizontal and vertical shelf positions, the “eye level is buy level” theory, and the number of shelf facings. We also consider the impact of walking direction on shelf perception. The combination of different research settings and different measurement instruments corroborates the external and internal validity of the findings, which are relevant for theory and practice.

Case Study: Patent-Pending Rigless Chemical Process Enhances Oil and Gas Production in Eagle Ford
  • Jan 1, 2022
  • Journal of Petroleum Technology
  • Michael Lantz

Hydrocarbon production losses resulting from parent-child well interactions during completion operations are a significant challenge in the Eagle Ford. A patent-pending rigless chemical frac hit remediation process was implemented in the Eagle Ford formation resulting in a 60% increase in oil production, a 30% increase in BOE reserves, and a payback in less than 4 months. A thorough engineering and lab study was conducted to design the process which addressed the damage mechanisms of capillary phase trapping, reduced hydrocarbon relative permeability, paraffin deposition, and minor scale deposition. Background and Challenge The Eagle Ford Shale play located across South Texas is a prolific unconventional resource producing approximately 967,000 BOPD and 6 Bcf/D of natural gas through 2021 (US Energy Information Administration). Like other unconventional reservoirs, Eagle Ford wells have high initial production rates but decline rapidly. Later-life production rates can significantly influence well economics and base production profitability. Production in the Eagle Ford rapidly started increasing around 2010 with the implementation of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, as operators started to develop their acreage, they quickly turned to drilling of infill wells, also known as child wells. Lindsay et al. (SPE 189875) reported that by the beginning of 2015, the number of child wells being drilled in the Eagle Ford surpassed the number of existing or parent wells. This resulted in an acceleration of child-parent interactions, defined as interwell communication between the child and the parent during the fracturing of the child well. Known as fracture-driven interference or frac hits, these interactions have been of intense interest in the industry due to the potential degradation of production in both the parent and child well. Miller et al. (SPE 180200) reported that in 1,210 instances studied in the Eagle Ford, the parent well experienced a negative production event approximately 41% of the time. Kairos Energy Services conducted a study on Eagle Ford parent wells that experienced negative production events from a frac hit to quantify the change in production. A total of six wells were analyzed where each had modern completions and were brought onto production in 2019 or later. Decline curve analysis was run on both the oil and gas streams before the frac hit to generate a forecast to compare against actual post-frac-hit production. Actual and forecast production was averaged across the six wells and production responses were analyzed 6 months before and after the frac hit. Fig. 1 shows the forecast vs. actual cumulative production for both oil and gas, respectively. The divergence in production post frac hit can be clearly seen, resulting in an average per well loss of 20,500 bbl of oil and 245,000 Mcf of gas 6 months following the frac hit. All wells showed a significant increase in water production directly after the frac hit, indicating hydraulic communication. The gas/oil ratio (GOR) was significantly suppressed, decreasing from 4,820 ft3/bbl to 3,850 ft3/bbl 6 months post frac hit. The 30-day average water cut also showed a sustained change, increasing from 46% to 63% 6 months post frac hit.

Applicability of Perinereis aibuhitensis Grube for fish waste removal from fish cages in Sanggou Bay, P. R. China
  • Nov 12, 2016
  • Journal of Ocean University of China
  • Jinghui Fang + 7 more

The present study investigated the applicability of integrated polychaete-fish culture for fish waste removal to offset negative impact induced by organic benthic enrichment. A field study demonstrated that deposition rate was significantly higher underneath the fish farm than that in control area. The material settling under the farm was characterized by a high amount of fish feces (45%) and uneaten feed (27%). Both feeding rate (FR) and apparent digestibility rate (ADR) increased with decreasing body weight, as was indicated by significantly a higher rate observed for the groups containing smaller individuals in a lab study. The nutrient in fresh deposited material (De) was higher than that in sediments collected under the farm (Se), resulting in lower feces production but higher apparent digestibility rate for the De group as feeding rate was similar. Consequently, higher nutrient removal efficiency was observed in the De group. A mass balance approach indicated that approximately 400–500 individuals m−2 is required for removing all waste materials deposited underneath the fish farm, whereas abundance can be lower (about 300–350 individuals m−2) when only the fish waste needs to be removed. The results showed that a significant amount of waste had been accumulated in the fish cages in Sanggou Bay. The integration of fish with P. aibuhitensis seems promising for preventing organic pollution in the sediment and therefore is an effective strategy for mitigating negative effect of fish farms. Thus such integration can become a new IMTA (integrated multi-trophic aquaculture) model in Sanggou Bay.

PDO labels and food preferences: results from a sensory analysis
  • Nov 13, 2020
  • British Food Journal
  • Elisabetta Savelli + 4 more

PurposeThe paper aims at investigating whether and how the product designation of origin (PDO) label influences consumers' acceptance, attributes' perception and purchase intention of PDO foods.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs an experimental lab study based on the affective test of acceptance methodology with a nine-point hedonic scale. Three PDO foods are compared with similar non-PDO samples concerning cheese, cured ham and olive oil categories.FindingsThe presence of PDO labels enhances the consumers' acceptance as well as their perception of sensory attributes. A critical role of the brand name as an enhancer of consumer acceptance also emerges, highlighting the relationship between brand-name and PDO label.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limitation is related to the lab study methodology, which employs a small number of participants and occurs far from a “normal” situation of consumption. The acceptance test, moreover, does not provide explanations about motives underlying the differences in consumers' perception and preferences.Practical implicationsPractical implications are suggested for food companies concerning the management of both PDO labels and brand strategies and the product's properties that could improve the sensory perception of consumers and their overall product's acceptance.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the debate on consumer behaviour towards PDO foods by adding evidence about the positive influence of such a certification on individual preferences on the basis of a sensory methodology that has been little employed for studying the domain of product certifications.

Removal of Organic Deposits from Oil Producing Wells in a Sandstone Reservoir: A Lab Study and a Case History
  • Mar 10, 2013
  • Ali A Al-Taq + 3 more

Organic deposit including asphaltene and paraffin may damage the near wellbore area and obstruct production tubings resulting in partial or total loss of well productivity. Most of asphaltene deposits are associated with paraffin. This paper presents a first successful field application of a lab proven/optimized chemical solvent to remove organic deposits from a dead oil well in a sandstone reservoir. A vertical gravel-packed oil producer well was dead due to deposition of organic material in 3 ½" production tubing forming obstruction to flow. The deposition is expected to take place due to long shut-in time as experienced in this well with high GOR. A bailer samples was obtained from this well. Analysis of the obstructing material indicated that they were mainly asphaltene associated with paraffin. Solubility of obtained organic deposits in several solvents was evaluated at reservoir temperature (188°F) and monitored as a function of soaking time. Several criteria were considered in selecting of the optimal solvent formulation, among which were safety and solvency power. The selected formulation incorporates asphaltene dissolver solvent and paraffin dissolver solvent in addition to surfactant. Application of the optimal solvent formulation, that exhibited the maximum solvency power in a minimum soaking time, was very effective in restoring well productivity while minimizing operational cost. A total of 12 feet of obstructing organic deposits were removed from the production tubing using coiled tubing in a multi-stage treatment. Following, the solvent was squeezed into the formation across the screens to maximize cleaning efficiency at the source. The sustainable oil production rate obtained and asphaltene content in flow back samples indicated that the treatment was very successful. To prevent further asphaltene/paraffin precipitation during shut-in time, asphaltene/paraffin inhibitor is recommended. A detail of asphaltene/paraffin formation mechanism, lab evaluation and field application results will be addressed.
