Abstract

For an aero engine containment casing is vital for containing any fan blade out event. Most of the containment casing being used are made up of hard wall approach and are designed conservatively by adding extra wall thickness for safety. Even a small reduction in the weight of an aero engine will help in bringing down the operating costs of the aircraft, which can be adopted by a new design of the hybrid concept of containment casing. In this paper, a hybrid concept comprising of the both hard and soft wall has been studied for tackling the containment of high-energy fragments from the released blade. Initially, the damage response of hard wall approach of Fan case is shown. Following, a hybrid system investigated to check the containment capability of the system by checking the energy absorption of the hybrid system built which comprises of titanium and carbon fiber using LS-DYNA. The variation of strain energy absorbed by the hybrid casing has been discussed in detail. From the study carried out the containment capability of the hybrid system looks to be promising.
