Abstract

“Family Systems Theory” refers to the work of Murray Bowen, M.D., of Georgetown University. Over the past three decades Dr. Bowen has been a pioneer in the study of the human family. The product of his work is the Bowen Family Systems Theory, more simply referred to as the Bowen Theory. Consisting of eight interlocking concepts, Bowen Theory addresses the emotional forces that shape the functioning of nuclear and extended families. A methodology for work with families has developed directly from Bowen Theory and within the general framework of the methodology are a number of general techniques. The methodology and techniques are family systems therapy. Bowen Family Systems Theory and Therapy are taught primarily at the Georgetown University Family Center, where Dr. Bowen has assembled a faculty and developed a series of training programs.
