Abstract
Carapace quadrate, transversely rectangular, pentagonal, markedly thick, dorsal surface moderately convex, smooth, regions weakly or never defined, lateral margins entire, without any dentation, junction between anterolateral and posterolateral margins not distinct. Front markedly narrow, straight, or very faintly bilobed, strongly deflexed. Orbits broad, occupying most part of anterior margin of carapace, eyestalks slender, characteristically long. Antennules folded obliquely to longitudinally, basal segment markedly enlarged, globose to ovate. Antennae with small basal segment and short flagellum. Third maxillipeds completely covering buccal cavern, with gap between, but never rhomboidal, exopod slender and sometimes very short, not easily visible when maxilliped closed. Chelipeds characteristically unequal, larger cheliped always longer than carapace, sexually dimorphic. Walking legs comparatively slender, long, characteristic pouch between bases of walking legs 2–3 or 3–4 serrated by setae, leading into buccal cavity, functioning as supplementary to breathing system. Abdomen of males and females with seven freely moving somites. Genital opening of males and females sternal.
