Abstract
Mental health professionals are being increasingly called upon to help families cope with cancer. Each family must negotiate unique tasks when faced with cancer. These tasks differ with regard to the developmental stage of the family system in combination with the clinical course of cancer. Stages of family development and the phases of cancer in combination with family themes, myths, and rules are presented in order to facilitate counselor understanding of adult cancer's impact on the family.
