Abstract

A thallium scan of the chest was performed to help exclude recurrent lung carcinoma in a patient 6-months status after undergoing left upper lobectomy for adenosquamous lung carcinoma. Thallium-SPECT images show increased uptake posterior and lateral to the heart. However, on review of the CT scan taken earlier, the questionnable area of recurrence was in the left upper chest. The thallium uptake corresponded to the spleen, which was seen on CT to be located in the left lower chest and was secondary to volume loss after the lobectomy. The results of this case show an interesting false positive for thallium uptake in the chest, secondary to splenic activity. The results emphasize the importance of correlating the thallium chest images with radiological studies.
