Abstract
Almost forty years after the ill-fated self-transformation attempt of the Greek dictatorship of the colonels, also known as ‘the Markezinis experiment’, this article tries to deal with this incident. Its main thesis will be that, in contrast to most interpretations of it as a ‘fake’ reforma, it was a genuine effort of the regime elites to tansform the regime, which failed because of both the nature of the dictatorship, as well as because of certain choices and mistakes of the regime elites and anti-elites involved in the process.
