Abstract

Introduction: It has been postulated that the apparent ability of recombinant human leptin therapy to reverse clinical hypothalamic amenorrhea would support the validity of the energy balance/deficiency (EBD) hypothesis. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of leptin administration on catecholestrogen (CE) metabolism and menstrual status in eucaloric female athletes. Methods: Sixteen healthy eumenorrheic female athletes free of oral contraceptives, participated in a 3-month cross-over trial, with 2 months of leptin treatment.
