ISBN 978-0-06-155474-2$16.99 R Gr. 6-9 Since the Sundering that robbed them of their magic, the faeries of Oakenwyld don't dare leave the safety of the great Oak and the protection of Queen Amaryllis. Knife, however, has always been intrigued by the mysteries of the outside world, and her gutsy determination earns her the title of the Queen's Hunter, a position that allows her a bit of freedom as she hunts for food away from the Oak. As more and more of her fellow faeries fall victim to the Silence, a sort of paralysis that is believed to be a residual effect of the Sundering, Knife becomes intent upon saving her people and believes that her connection with Paul, a disabled human boy, holds the key to the Oakenfolk's survival. Anderson capably blends a thrilling race against time, as Knife encounters surly crows, hungry cats, and secretive faeries, with thoughtful ruminations on relationships, the corruption of power, and self-sacrifice. The protagonist's relationship with Paul is at times a bit saccharine, but it also serves as an effective vehicle by which the reader relates to both party's vulnerabilities while witnessing their growth. As the secrets of Oakenwyld's past are slowly revealed through a series of mysterious diaries and Knife and Paul's relationship heats up, readers will be racing through the pages right along with Knife to discover the fate of her world and her love.
