Abstract

A recently proposed incremental state variable model for non-Newtonian fluids is shown to exhibit “fading memory” under the imposition of an additional restriction on the state evolution equation and a limit on the “severity” of the imposed deformation program. This leads to the conclusion that the present model is a simple fluid with appropriate topological restrictions on the domain of deformation histories. The analysis depends on a reformulation of the original theory in terms of a finite log-strain tensor in place of a Green-type deformation tensor. A thorough exposition of the algebraic properties of the associated (log-strain to Green deformation) transformation operators is given in an Appendix.
