Abstract

ABSTRACT Local economies have increasingly employed industrial recruitment as a stimulus for their economic growth. This study seeks to identify and verify various factors that affect retail trade in these rural areas. Of special focus, was the question of whether “demand factors” and/or “location and time” effects are relevant. It can be concluded that four primary demand factors have strong influences on the retail activity of an area. Also, along with the demand factors, some location and time effects are also relevant. As merchants and chambers of commerce in rural areas encounter mounting challenges from urban centers, policies that incorporate a structural understanding can aid them in fortifying their local economies.
