Abstract

ABSTRACT Like the rest of the shipping industry, the cruise industry needs to meet the requirements of the IMO's sulphur cap 2020. Cruise lines have three options: (1) using alternative fuels; (2) switching to low-sulphur fuels; (3) installing scrubbers. This paper aims to identify the influencing factors of abatement decisions through multinomial logit regression. The results indicate cruise shipping companies have different patterns in choosing emission reduction options for existing fleets and new ships. Abatement options are found to be dependent on the cruise ship's size, age, and flag but are irrelated to its sailing area. In addition, cruise lines’ decisions are influenced by headquarters’ location, but fuel price fluctuations and the competitiveness of cruise lines have no decisive effect. This study fills a gap in the empirical analysis of actual abatement choices for cruise lines and provides practical policy implications for the green transition of the cruise industry.
